Album Commentary

In May 1999, after a two-year absence, the Backstreet Boys returned with confidence and pride, declaring to their vast number of fans through the passionate voice of “I Want It That Way” that “the Backstreet Boys are back!” Every fan who loved and supported the Backstreet Boys was filled with an overwhelming sense of happiness when they saw the music video for the first single. The most direct response came with “I Want It That Way,” which set a worldwide record by simultaneously reaching No. 1 on the pop charts in more than 30 countries.
No one would question the Backstreet Boys’ position in today’s pop music world. The title “kings among kings” is simply another term of respect for them; surpassing total sales of 50 million records within three months was, for them, merely another demonstration of their strength. More importantly, through their own hard work and the support of their fans, the Backstreet Boys had firmly established themselves as one of the leading forces in popular music entering the next century.
As if following an unchanging law of nature, the Backstreet Boys’ second single, “Larger Than Life,” had already created an almost overwhelming sense of anticipation even before its release. Its music video, produced at a cost of several million U.S. dollars, incorporated elements from some of the most popular science-fiction films and works of the 1990s, including Alien, Star Wars, The Fifth Element, and Japan’s Gundam. Filled with a strong sense of the future, the video perfectly declared the Backstreet Boys’ determination to cross into the next century and establish their dominance in the pop music world of the 21st century.
